The Digger is Glasgow’s 24 page underground crime newspaper, focusing on local organised crime, police corruption, court tales, gangsters, dodgy councillors and prison gossip. Located at corner shop tills, absurd headlines often grab you when you’re picking up a few bits: ‘Gang Banger in Bed with Four Cops’, ‘Posso Lotto Fletto’ and ‘Weegie Wars’ are just some from the past 2 decades. Founded by James Cruickshank in a kitchen of a high rise flat in one of the poorest parts of Europe, Possil in Glasgow, sales begin door-to-door and at outdoor markets. Due to its focus on usually working class people, Glasgow’s underworld figures, and it’s anonymous tip-off phone line, The Digger has faced ongoing criticism of poor fact-checking and publishing unverified claims. The papers sensationalism, grammatical errors, and rough style is what both lures and dismisses readers. It’s been repeatedly targeted by some of the UK’s top law firms in efforts to shut it down. Cruickshanks house in Possil was covered in paint in 2007, forcing him to move.
